10 things you should not do in Japan

No matter how long you spent in Japan or what you thought you knew about. There is always something we do without attention and perception, whether it is just an unintentional mistake or otherwise.

1) Put the right side of the kimono / yukata above the left side.
Do not fold your kimono or yukata in this way at all. Always be careful to fold the left side on the right side.

2) Speak loudly on the subway.
This seems obvious, you can find this rule of etiquette written in any guide: do not talk too loud in the subway. It is a quiet place where discussions are low.
However, some people (especially foreigners), do not notice that their voice is still high. In this case, you should just "whisper".

3) Do not put the garbage incorrectly.
It is about recycling. The phrase "place for everything and everything in this place" does not apply in Japan, sometimes some hesitate because it does not know whether this or that is flammable or not. But others may forget it because of laziness. Make sure that you are not part of the second category. Always do your best to put the trash in the right place.

4) Make a circle with your thumb and forefinger to say "Well!".
In Japan, this movement is linked to "money". You should think twice before referring to someone with this movement because you may have signed a physical agreement without realizing it. It is best to use oral language.

5) Do not hide the front of your book in the subway.
This usually works with paper books or manga. This is not a courtesy
But for common sense, however, you can find beautiful covers for your books! You'll be able to hide the address of one of your books or if it's unconventional;)

6) Do not bring drinks with you if you go to a bar or restaurant.
Tipping is something that does not exist in Japan as it is quite natural that the restaurant offers you excellent service without extra payment.
Also, do not bring food or drink from outside, it can mean you do not care about food or drinks offered by them, Even before you taste it.

7) Do not walk / stand on the right side of the stairs / elevator.
Do not dare to do such people who stand where we must walk, and walk where you must stand because this is a clear mistake!
Generally, the escalators in the Kanto area, you have to stand on the left side and if you want to walk, you should do the right side. However, in Kansai, the opposite is done.
If you are afraid to forget, just see how others do it and everything will be fine.

8) don't use your chopsticks wrongly.
Many people know the golden rule: do not plant these chopsticks in rice!
It is best to leave chopsticks on a plate or a special container when not in use.

9) Do not give priority in all cases.
If you are so tired, there is a priority ("yuusenseki" in Japanese), you can sit there.
But once the train starts to fill up, those places belong to priority people and must be given to them. There are no excuses for this because you can see if a person needs it.

10) Leave your clothes dry for too long.
You should know that it is a common practice that you put clothes out on the balcony to dry. But if you leave it for a long time,  may seem neglected.
